Stairwell and attic with custom made waterfall wallpaper

When we saw the waterfall wallpaper we were immediately enthusiastic. The colours, the print and the sense of depth suit us. While wallpaper like this can, perhaps initially, shine in a bedroom, we actually thought it would be very cool to use it in the stairwell and on the high attic wall. Studio Ditte has custom made the blue waterfall wallpaper.

Light, warm and Scandinavian with colorful details

In the autumn of 2022 we received the keys to our new house. After years of living with 5 people in very small houses under 95 m2, we were able to buy a nice 1930s house at the peak of the housing market, on the edge of the center of Delft. We have tackled a lot in the new house. New floors on all floors, 2 new dormer windows, electricity, a new bathroom and toilets. Our living style is light, warm with Scandinavian influences and a mix of colorful details. I don't think our house fits into a certain living style, we do it in our own way and attach particular importance to things with a story. We often choose natural as a base, but with fine color accents or special materials. The hall downstairs looked stately because of the stained glass and we decided to provide it with wallpaper. A tough job but with great results. This gave rise to the idea of also wallpapering the stairwell to the attic. After months of work, the attic was put on the backlog list for a while. We chose to first tackle the entire garden from a large tile thing to a green, flowery place where we can enjoy.

Love for interior design and photography

Instagram is a place where I get a lot of inspiration and which I use to share my own ideas, experiences and interior pictures. When I have a plan for the house, I use Instagram and Pinterest to find the space I want to tackle by using tags, for example. I see all kinds of things passing by that confirm or deter me from my idea. By looking at others my creative brain 'switches on', copying ideas 1 on 1 is not possible. I really enjoy putting my own spin on things. I have always had a love for interior design and photography. As a child I loved reading home magazines and my room was constantly changing. Dragging another cupboard from the attic and decorating a corner around a whole theme. I see this in more people within the family. I can still remember that, as an 11-year-old, I sent a letter to an interior design magazine to offer myself as an employee. Ultimately I started doing something completely different, but the job I had in mind at the time has always appealed to me. When I started at the art academy, I enrolled in the interior architecture course, but due to the enthusiasm of the teachers, I switched to photography. The doubt has always remained, but fortunately I can express my love for both in my spare time, by creating beautiful settings at home and then photographing them.

The colours, the print and the sense of depth suit us

When we saw the waterfall wallpaper we were immediately enthusiastic. The colours, the print and the sense of depth suit us. While wallpaper like this can, perhaps initially, shine in a bedroom, we actually thought it would be very cool to use it in the stairwell and on the high attic wall. When the collaboration with Studio Ditte became concrete, it was a great incentive to tackle the entire attic. The woodwork and walls also had to be given a new layer of paint and a lot of tidying up was required. We mainly use the attic as storage space and laundry room. It was a tough job that we really put our shoulders to the wheel of. I tore my ankle ligaments on holiday in Sweden last summer, so balancing on a ladder, which was really necessary for this project, was not an option. Fortunately, Co and I are a great team. When we met, we wallpapered a wall together in my then house and since then, nice wallpaper prints have been used on the walls in every house.

Studio Ditte wallpaper made to measure

The waterfall wallpaper from Studio Ditte was made to measure, we were actually able to place the strips in numbered order. We have a handy trick when eliminating the seams between the strips. We pull the wallpaper back slightly and then push it into the seam of the previous strip. This way you won't see anything anymore. The blue color of the wallpaper matches wonderfully with the green-yellow color I mixed in the hall on the 1st floor. We are considering hanging our collection of skateboards in the stairwell. We also think cool frames with art on the high wall are an option. A tip here is to choose frames in the same materials or colors. For example, by only using wooden frames or white frames. Unity in those choices means that you can actually combine very diverse prints with each other, thus creating coherence. For now we will enjoy the unity of the print of the wallpaper itself and the result of our acrobatic work. Letting plans sink in for a while sometimes allows you to enjoy the final result more later.
